A child who has been in Turkey is deemed to have been born in Turkey unless it is proven that he was born outside of Turkey. Acquisition of Turkish Citizenship According to General Provisions

Persons who are citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus by birth and wish to acquire Turkish citizenship, if they declare in writing that they want to become Turkish citizens, acquire Turkish citizenship with the decision of the Ministry.

The right to choose and the loss of Turkish citizenship become effective as of the date of the Ministry's decision regarding the determination of the existence of the conditions for the use of this right.

Foreigners who have a residence permit pursuant to subparagraph (j) of the first paragraph of Article 31 of the Law on Foreigners and International Protection dated 4/4/2013 and numbered 6458, and foreigners holding Turquoise Card and their foreign spouses, minor or dependent foreign children of themselves and their spouses.

The citizenship file of persons who are accepted as immigrants after their procedures are completed according to the Settlement Law No. 5543 is prepared by the provincial directorate of migration administration and sent to the Ministry. Pursuant to Article 12 of the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901:

Pursuant to Article 13 of the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901:


Provided that there is no obstacle in terms of national security, the persons stated below can regain Turkish citizenship by the decision of the Ministry, regardless of their residence period in Turkey.

Those who lost their Turkish citizenship by obtaining a leave of absence.

Those who have lost their Turkish citizenship due to their parents, who do not use their right to choose within the period stipulated in Article 21.

Pursuant to Article 43 of the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901:


Pursuant to subparagraphs (a), (ç), (d) and e of the repealed Turkish Citizenship Law No. 403, persons who have lost their Turkish citizenship apply, provided that they do not have a situation that will constitute an obstacle in terms of national security, without the condition of residing in Turkey. They can be re-acquired Turkish citizenship by the decision of the Council of Ministers.


Those who have lost their Turkish citizenship according to Law No. 5901 and those who have lost their Turkish citizenship by exercising their right to vote can regain their Turkish citizenship provided that they do not have a situation that will pose an obstacle in terms of national security and that they have resided in Turkey for three years.


Pursuant to Article 14 of the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901:


Those who have lost their Turkish citizenship pursuant to Article 29 may regain their Turkish citizenship by the decision of the Council of Ministers, and those who have lost their Turkish citizenship pursuant to Article 34, by the decision of the Ministry, provided that they do not have a situation that may pose an obstacle in terms of national security and that they have resided in Turkey for three years.



Marriage with a Turkish citizen does not directly acquire Turkish citizenship. Foreigners who have been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years and whose marriage continues can apply to acquire Turkish citizenship.


If the marriage is terminated due to the death of the Turkish citizen spouse after the application date, the condition of living in family unity is not sought.


Foreigners who acquire Turkish citizenship by marriage, if they have good intentions in getting married, retain their Turkish citizenship.

In the event that the marriage of a foreigner who has acquired Turkish citizenship by marriage is decided to be null and void, the question of whether he will retain Turkish citizenship is asked from the Ministry through the Governor's Office.

Pursuant to Article 16 of the Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901:

Marriage with a Turkish citizen does not directly acquire Turkish citizenship. However, foreigners who have been married to a Turkish citizen for at least three years and whose marriage continues can apply to acquire Turkish citizenship. In applicants;

Living in family unity,

Not to engage in any activity incompatible with the of marriage,

Conditions of not being in a situation that would constitute an obstacle in terms of national security and public order are sought.

In the event that the marriage is terminated due to the death of the Turkish citizen spouse after the application, the condition in subparagraph (a) of the first paragraph is not sought.
